Samsung Exynos 5 Octa: entro fine anno sarà in grado di utilizzare gli 8 core simultaneamente

Attualmente i SoC Samsung Exynos 5 Octa vengono definiti octa-core ma lavorano esclusivamente come un normale quad-core, dato che non sfruttano la potenza degli 8 core contemporaneamente. Praticamente gli Exynos 5 Octa sono degli ottimi quad-core ma non lo resteranno per molto, infatti entro fine anno saranno a tutti gli effetti dei SoC Octa-core dato che, come comunica il produttore sud-coreano, gli 8 core lavoreranno simultaneamente.

Con la soluzione Heterogeneous Multi-Processing presto i nuovi Exynos 5 Octa potranno essere definiti degli octa-core a tutti gli effetti.

Questa nuova soluzione sarà disponibile nel Q4 2013 e permetterà di sfruttare entrambi i lati dell’ottima configurazione ARM big-LITTLE contemporaneamente, con un aumento sia delle prestazioni che dell’efficienza. Mentre le operazioni software con priorità alta vengono compiute dai “big” core A15, le operazioni con priorità bassa vengono eseguite dai “LITTLE” A7, senza dover attendere lo switch tra i vari threads, come avviene negli attuali chipset.

Ovviamente Samsung non sarà l’unico ad adottare questa soluzione, infatti già durante lo scorso Luglio il produttore MediaTek aveva annunciato la stessa soluzione per i propri octa-core MT8135.

Purtroppo non ci sono ulteriori dettagli ed il comunicato stampa non rivela altri dati sui prossimi Exynos 5 Octa. Attendiamo altre informazioni ed intanto vi lasciamo ad un primo video introduttivo:

Samsung Primes Exynos 5 Octa for ARM big.LITTLE Technology with Heterogeneous Multi-Processing Capability

The HMP capability gives system-level designers the ability to develop solutions that deliver the right combination of high-performance and low-power to carry out tasks such as 3D gaming, complex augmented reality and advanced web browsing.

HMP is the most powerful use model for ARM big.LITTLE technology, as it enables the use of all physical cores at the same time. Software threads with high priority or high computational intensity can be allocated to the ‘big’ Cortex-A15 cores while threads with less priority or are less computationally intensive, can be performed by the ‘LITTLE’ Cortex-A7 cores, enabling a highly responsive, low-energy system to be built.

 

Software implementation is essential to maximizing the benefits of big.LITTLE technology. Multi-processing software controls the scheduling of threads of execution to the appropriate core. In earlier versions of the big.LITTLE software, the whole processor context is moved up to the ‘big’ core or down to the ‘LITTLE’ core based on the measured work load. In-depth study and analysis of diverse use case scenarios enable Samsung to achieve efficiency and high-performance, while managing power levels to deliver optimal user environments.

The HMP solution for Samsung’s Exynos 5 Octa application processors will be available to customers in 4Q of 2013.
