Can't figure out how to get custom ringtone for sms messages.(Android)

Hi guys I have a g2x by LG on T mobile currently running Android 2.3. On the stock messaging app I can only chose from there crappy ringtone selection and can't do it custom. If I download another app like GO SMS I can have custom ringtones. Anyways wondering IF there is anyway tog et around this without having a different app? ( Other apps it takes longer to get picture messages)
